♡ Grey Stages/Variants
Due to the huge variety in how the Grey gene can present, we have chosen to offer a handful of loose stage categories as variants for foal designing. This page serves as a quick "cheat-sheet" for these stages. Please keep in mind that your foal may not look exactly like the examples here. There is quite a bit of overlap between each stage, along with the natural variance that comes from having different coat colors, modifiers, and so on. The variants offered are intended to give a general idea of grey coverage rather than a rigid guideline.
There are two additional attributes that can be present on some Greys, at the designer's discretion. These cannot be specifically requested or prevented, but below is some info that may help guide your overall selection:
- Fleabites: Fleabites are small flecks of the horse's original color scattered across the coat. This trait is specifically tied to the Late Grey and White Grey variants. Early Grey and Medium Grey ponies will not be designed with fleabites.
- Bloodmarks: Bloodmarks are patches of the horse's original color; usually only 1-2 on a given horse. These patches do not grey out any further, but rather remain the original color throughout the horse's life.
- It is also possible for a horse to have both of these traits - see ID-1184: ༶Coney Island༶ for an example.
Now that we've covered those, let's take a look at our selectable Variants!
♡ Early Grey
Early Greys mostly show their original color, with greying beginning to progress from the first areas of effect - typically the face, groin, armpit, etc.
♡ Medium Grey
Mediums Greys have significantly more greying, but are still recognizable as their original color. They are more colored than greyed out.
♡ Late Grey
Late Greys are mostly greyed out, with only some areas of color remaining. Their markings are usually still identifiable, but may be partially obscured by their lightest areas.
♡ White Grey
White Greys are fully greyed out, making the coat almost entirely white. They may occasionally have some color left on the legs.
